Saturday, February 14, 2009 PAGE 5 Daniels seeks support for local government revamp Web site aimed at helping Indiana students seek aid INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Commission for Higher Education wants more Indiana families to file a critical college financial aid form before an upcoming deadline. The commission says more than 150,000 Indiana residents missed the deadline last year to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The form is also required to receive state financial aid for college. Some families may not file because the form seems to complicated or because they think they wont qualify for aid. But higher education advocates want more people to file the form.

The commission is providing step-by-step instructional videos online. The commission is also planning a live online chat to answer questions about the form on Feb 27 To access state college aid, students must file the application form by March 10. we'll see where we go from there." Daniels, a Republican, and reorganization advocates hope the meetings will generate more support for the bills. "We're getting the distinct feeling that the public needs to have greater understanding of what these bills are and the impact of these bills on their local communities," said Marilyn Schultz, executive director of the mysmartgov.org advocacy group and a former top aide to Democratic governors. The organization sponsored by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and several other groups has already planned meetings in Kokomo, Fort Wayne, Terre Haute and Evansville.

More cities could be added later, Schultz said. The group is also asking supporters to write, call or e-mail their legislators about the issue. Opponents have also been working hard to lobby lawmakers. Dozens of township trustees attending a hearing this week on the proposal to eliminate township government, Many opponents held signs urging lawmakers to defeat the proposal, and others wore neon green T-shirts with the message "protect and save your township government." Supporters say streamlining local government would make the system more efficient and responsive, while opponents say it's important for government to be close to the people to best serve them. The revamping proposals stem from a 2007 report by the Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform, which was headed by former Democratic Gov.

Joe Kernan and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall Shepard. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Gov. Mitch Daniels wants to build support across Indiana for his efforts to restructure local government. Daniels and a government streamlining advocacy group said Friday they will hold regional meetings in several cities focusing on ways that local government can become more efficient, effective and accountable. Daniels supports proposals to revamp local government, including bills to eliminate townships and replace the current three-member boards of county commissioners with a single county executive.

But the legislation has come under fire from some lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, as the bills are discussed in the Senate. Daniels said he thinks most people support the proposals, but that some township trustees and others who dont want to make the changes are dominating the debate. "The opposition may be small, but it's highly concentrated and vocal," Daniels told reporters at his Statehouse office Friday. "If only the special interests are heard, then these bills will have difficulty." Even if the proposals do clear the GOP-controlled Senate, they face bigger hurdles in the Democratic-controlled House. Daniels said he was open to approving possible compromise versions of the proposals.

But House leaders have not been eager to consider the revamping bills. House Speaker Patrick Bauer, D-South Bend, said Friday that the reorganization proposals take the focus off more pressing priorities like job creation. When asked whether the legislation would get a committee hearing in the House, he replied, "It'll get scrutiny, and Lawmakers add tax cuts for cycles, RVs to stimulus Governor wants stimulus to make big Indiana impact INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana stands to receive about $4 billion from the federal economic stimulus package, and Gov. Mitch Daniels wants to concentrate some of the state's share into big projects that would set Indiana The science of the smooch is WASHINGTON (AP) Add motorcycles and motoi homes to the list of things buyers can get federal tax breaks for, courtesy of lawmakers who won eleventh-hour additions to the stimulus bill to help home-state industries. Tax deductions for both types of vehicles were added to the compromise $787 billion stimulus package that lawmakers were hoping to complete as early as Friday.

Art earlier version of the language, included in the Senate-passed stimulus, only applied to passenger automobiles and light trucks. Four senators successfully lobbied for including motorcycles in the legislation: Bob Casey, Christopher Bond, R-Mo Russell Feingold, and Herb Kohl, D-Wis Harley-Davidson Inc announced last month that it will cut 1 1 00 jobs over the next two years, with about 650 cuts in Wisconsin, more than 400 at a facility in York, and about 85 at a plant in Kansas City, Mo. "The issues of consumer confi LEGAL dence and tight credit markets have not evaded motorcycle dealers," the four senators wrote to congressional leaders who put the finishing touches on the stimulus bill. "The effect of the downturn not only impacts the dealers it has hurt manufacturers as well." At the same time, two Indiana Democrats Sen. Evan Bayh and Rep.

Joe Donnelly won the same benefits for recreational vehicles, many of which are made in Indiana. Top manufacturers in Indiana include Coachmen Industries Damon Gulf Stream Coach and Dynamax Corp. Much of the state's motor home industry is focused around Elkhart, which calls itself the "RV Capital of the World." President Barack Obama visited Elkhart Monday as he pressured Congress to quickly approve the stimulus legislation. Unemployment in that part of the state exceeds 1 5 percent, according to state officials. NOTICE Much of the stimulus money will come with strings attached, so Indiana can't spend all the cash however it wants.

But some of the money wont have strict guidelines, and Daniels says he's considering new initiatives possibly involving in a student health center, Hill noted. She plans a repeat "in a more romantic setting." Hill spoke at the session on the Science of Kissing, along with Helen Fisher of Rutgers University and Donald Lateiner of Ohio Wesleyan University. Fisher noted that more than 90 percent of human societies practice kissing, which she believes has three components the sex drive, romantic love and attachment. The sex drive pushes individuals to assess a variety of partners, then romantic love causes them to focus on an individual, she said. Attachment then allows them to LEGAL NOTICE STATE OF INDIANA COUNTY OF MADISON SS: IN THE MADISON CIRCUIT COURT 2000 TERM CAUSE NO.
